What is a hair implant?

Suffering from hair loss is a widespread problem that affects more and more people every day, both men and women. Hair loss has a direct impact on people’s self-esteem. Fortunately, this has a solution thanks to hair implants.

Hair implant surgery is a surgical procedure in which hair is transplanted from a donor area to a recipient area that has experienced hair loss.

The most commonly used technique is follicular unit transplantation, which consists of extracting groups of hair and hair follicles from the donor area and then implanting them in the bald or less dense area.

Hair implants may be an option to treat androgenetic alopecia and other forms of hair loss, but it is important to carefully weigh the potential risks and benefits before making the decision to undergo this surgery.

General steps of a hair implant surgery.

1. Evaluation: The surgeon assesses the quality of the patient’s hair and skin, the cause of the hair loss, and the donor area from which the hair follicles will be removed.

2. Preparation: The surgeon assesses the quality of the patient’s hair and skin, the cause of the hair loss, and the donor area from which the hair follicles will be removed.

3. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered in the donor area and in the recipient area.

4. Extraction of hair follicles: Hair follicles are extracted from the donor area using techniques such as follicular unit extraction (FUE) or scalp strip extraction (FUT).

5. Preparation of grafts: The medical staff prepares the grafts, which consist of the extracted hair follicles, for their subsequent implantation in the bald area or with less density.

6. Implantation: The surgeon makes small incisions in the recipient area and carefully implants the grafts.

7. Postoperative care: The patient receives instructions on how to care for the transplanted area, including avoiding sun exposure and avoiding certain physical activities.

It is important to note that the specific details of the surgery may vary depending on the technique used and the experience of the surgeon.

General recommendations

1. Consult with a specialist: It is important to seek a surgeon with experience in this type of procedure and undergo a prior evaluation to assess the feasibility of the implant.

2. Stop smoking: Smoking can negatively affect the healing and growth of transplanted hair, so it is recommended to stop smoking at least two weeks before surgery.

3. Avoid certain medications: The patient should consult with their doctor about the need to suspend or adjust the dose of certain medications, such as aspirin, anticoagulants or anti-inflammatories, which may increase the risk of complications during surgery.

4. Avoid alcohol consumption: It is recommended to avoid alcohol consumption at least one week before surgery, since it can affect the healing capacity and blood coagulation.

5. Take care of the hair: It is recommended to gently wash and comb the hair the day before surgery, and avoid dyeing or cutting the hair for at least a week before surgery.

It is important to follow all the surgeon’s recommendations to minimize the risk of complications and optimize the results of the surgery.
