What is Periodontics?

Dentistry Services

Periodontics is a branch of Dentistry that treats, prevents, and diagnoses diseases of the gums, the periodontal ligament, and the maxillary bones. Its objective is to clean the entire diseased area and prevent damage to the bone and gums. Among these diseases we find Gingivitis and Periodontitis and in them there are some phases where the disease can be very advanced.

Among the symptoms of diseases we can find:

  • Bleeding when you brush or when you eat.
  • Inflammation in the gums.
  • Redness of the gums.
  • Sensitivity in the gums, especially when we brush.
  • Receding gums (separation of the tooth).
  • Bad breath.
  • loose teeth

Why choose CDC?

At CDC, we have a team of highly experienced, licensed hygienists. Together with our dentists we guarantee an accurate diagnosis of any disease. In our clinics, in addition to curing periodontal diseases, we explain and educate our patients about the importance of oral health for their prevention. We stand out for preventive professional dental cleaning treatments.

When we diagnose Gingivitis it is very important to cure it quickly because in a short time it can lead to Periodontitis . When the disease progresses we find ourselves with the loss of tissue that supports the teeth and also with bone loss. Consequently, we lose dental pieces. Beyond this and according to some research, the bacteria pass through the bloodstream through the gums and can affect the heart, or other parts of the body.

At Clínica De La Cuesta we have surgical treatments and non-surgical treatments to cure these diseases. The objective is to eliminate the tartar pockets that have been created and that contain bacteria. With these procedures we prevent damage to the bones. We use anesthesia and therefore you will not feel pain. With our dentists and working together (good dental cleaning and daily at home) we must cure the disease.

non-surgical treatments

Scraping: With it we eliminate bacteria and tartar from the teeth and from below the gums. This procedure is performed with laser and ultrasound equipment.

Root Planing: Also known as Curettage . This treatment softens the surface of the roots and prevents scale and bacteria from accumulating in the future. It is performed under local anesthesia and is divided into different sessions or quadrants. After the curettage, it is normal for the inflammation of the gums to begin to go down and they return to their place. With this treatment we reduce inflammation and the entry of bacteria.

Antibiotics: With the treatment of antibiotics, the infection can be controlled. These are usually in gels or mouthwashes. However, other times it will be sent in pills to completely eliminate the infection.

surgical treatments

Pocket reduction surgery: With it we eliminate bacteria and tartar from the teeth and from below the gums. This procedure is performed with laser and ultrasound equipment.

Soft tissue graft: Also known as mucogingival surgery, and the most common reason for its performance is in those cases where there is a migration of the gum towards the root of the tooth. It is also performed when the aesthetics of the patient is compromised (in the gum).

Bone graft: They are used for the reconstruction of new tissues for the replacement and regeneration of destroyed and lost structures.

Frequent questions

It almost always starts with the creation of plaque that is made up of bacteria. Later on, the hardening of the gums begins and this is what causes inflammation and disease in the gums.

Periodontal disease has two stages. The least advanced is called Gingivitis. When the disease progresses and affects the tissues around the bone, it then goes to a second stage and becomes Periodontitis.
